Reading

Reading at Brady is taught through Read Write Inc. from EYFS to the end of Key Stage 1. From the end of Year 2, children become familiar with our comprehension skills aka the VIPERs. In Key Stage 2, the children begin Shared Reading lessons. In these lessons chapter books are read, discussed and comprehension skills are taught whilst exploring these texts. They also learn about the VIPERs reading skills in more depth and complete comprehension activities around these each week. All the texts that children read, whether in their English lessons, as part of shared reading, or end of the day story books, are chosen carefully to ensure the pupils at Brady are exposed to great authors, diverse texts and authors, books relating to their topics and books that just inspire and engage!

Writing

At Brady, we believe the best writing comes from being inspired and engaged. This is why teachers carefully plan sequenced lessons around a core text (usually the same as the shared reading text in Key Stage 2), real life experiences or cross curriculuar topics that have captured the imagination of the pupils.

In EYFS and Key Stage 1, teachers embed the necessary skills the children need to become competent writers. Lessons are based around engaging core texts and give pupils the opportunity to practise their transcription, spelling, grammar and handwriting skills. In these Key Stages, teachers work hard to reduce the cognitive load by using familiar sequences of learning and focus on skill mastery before explicitly teaching many genres of writing.

In Key Stage 2, the teachers follow the 'writing journey' when planning their writing lessons. This enables children to be exposed to different genres of writing, whilst practising new grammar skills and having the opportunity to use these skills in context.

Poetry is also taught throughout Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 2. These units follow a progression, ensuring the pupils are exposed to and have experience of writing a range of genres of poetry during their time at Brady.
