Year 5, Summer 2 Week 2

Well done to Year 5 for another amazing week.

In English, we have continued exploring Myths and Legends. The children had the opportunity to edit a WABOOL, allowing them to put their editing skills to the test. They have also planned and written the first draft of their own Myth or Legend.

In Reading, we have continued with our class text, Treason. This week, we have been focusing on our retrieval and prediction skills, such as predicting what might happen next in a chapter. The children have shared some thoughtful and imaginative ideas.

In Maths, we have concluded our negative numbers topic. We focused on comparing and ordering negative numbers, as well as finding the difference between two numbers. The children performed well on the end-of-unit test. We finished the week by completing a pre-assessment for our new unit on converting units.

The children were very lucky this week and enjoyed a performance from "Miles the Mole" where they learnt all about Air Quality and Pollution.

We also finished the week by making and eating tzatziki with pittas to celebrate Healthy Eating Week.

Just a reminder that next week is Assessment Week for Year 5, and Sports Day will take place on Friday afternoon.

Please also remember that children should be reading at least five times a week and regularly practising on TTRS.

Year 5 Summer 2 Week 1

Well done for a great first week back, Year 5- we are in our final half term!

This week, in Maths, we concluded our topic on Decimals. Our final lesson looked at multiplying and dividing decimals with missing values. We then moved onto our newtopic exploring Negative Numbers. To begin our topic, we looked at physical objects which use negative numbers, such as thermometers. To helped the children to understand what negative numbers are and use them in context.

In English, we began a new unit, preparing to write a Myth or Legend. We looked at WAGOLLs of book genres, and the children were able to spot key grammatical features within them. We also recapped using cohesive devices in our writing, to ensure that both our sentences and paragraphs link seamlessly.

For Geography, we also began our new unit 'Investigating our World'. Our first lesson consisted of us using OS maps, and exposing the children to the different features on there- many hadn't used one before! We looked at grid references, contour lines and many more features. We discussed how the children could use maps outside of school, and this helped to build on their fieldwork skills.

Have a lovely weekend, don't forget to read 5-7 times per week at home, as well as using TTRS. We are back to swimming on Tuesday 9th June.

Year 5 Summer 1 Week 5

Well done for a lovely week Year 5!

In maths this week, Year 5 have begun an exciting new topic on decimals. The children have been learning how to add and subtract decimals with the same number of decimal places, developing their confidence and accuracy with this new concept.

In reading, we have continued exploring Treason. The focus this week has been on developing prediction skills, with the children using clues from the text to suggest what might happen next. The children are finding the story engaging and are enjoying discussing the events and characters.

In English, we have started our new unit on explanation texts. The children have had the opportunity to research their chosen topics and have begun planning their own pieces of writing in preparation for drafting next week.

In History, the children have been learning about King Henry VIII, focusing on his character and personality. They have explored what he was like as a ruler and how his behaviour influenced events during his reign.

In Art, the children created their own expressionist-style paintings. They explored how colour and brushstrokes can be used to show feeling and expression, producing some fantastic and creative pieces of work.

Finally, just a reminder that children should continue to practise their times tables on TTRS regularly and aim to read at least five times each week.

Have a lovely weekend.
