year 2 summer 2 week 1

Year 2 have had a fantastic first week back after half term. It has been a very busy and exciting week, and the children have settled straight back into their learning.

English
In English, the children have started a new book called How Anansi Got His Stories. This text celebrates the rich storytelling traditions of Africa, and the children have really been enjoying exploring it so far. Alongside this, they have been focusing on important grammar skills, including using a range of different suffixes and revisiting how to write exclamations effectively.

Maths
In Maths, the children have continued their unit on direction and have now completed their end-of-unit assessment. We are very proud of how hard they have worked, and their results reflect their effort and progress. Moving forward, we will be focusing on consolidating Year 2 maths content to ensure all children feel confident and secure in their learning.

Topic – Curious Coastlines
We have begun our new topic, Curious Coastlines. The children have started by exploring the different features of a coastline and learning key vocabulary linked to this topic. It has been a great introduction, and the children have shown lots of curiosity.

Science
In Science, we have been learning about marine life found along the coast. The children carried out an investigation and used their findings to create a fact file, presenting their knowledge clearly and confidently.

Special Visitor
We were also lucky to have a visitor deliver an exciting assembly based on science experiments. The children particularly enjoyed the bubble experiments and loved getting involved.

Music
The children have been practising songs in preparation for our upcoming concert. We are learning Three Little Birds by Bob Marley and I'm Walking on Sunshine by Katrina and the Waves. Please continue to practise these at home.

Well done, Year 2, for such a positive and hardworking start to the half term.

Year 2 15.5.2026

It has been another busy and exciting week in Year 2, with the children continuing to show great enthusiasm and curiosity across all areas of their learning. They have been working hard to build on their knowledge and are enjoying exploring new topics together.

This week in maths, the children have completed their unit on statistics, where they developed their understanding of interpreting and creating charts and graphs. They have now begun a new unit on position and direction, exploring movement, turns, and how to describe position using mathematical language.

In English, the children are continuing to work towards writing a character description of King Henry VIII. They have been carefully working through each of the success criteria for descriptive writing, focusing on adding detail, using interesting vocabulary, and structuring their sentences effectively.

In history, we explored the feudal system, helping the children to understand how society was organised in medieval times and the roles people played within it.

In science, we looked at the germination of seeds. The children planted their own seeds and are looking forward to observing how they grow and what they need to thrive.

Well done, Year 2, for your continued hard work and enthusiasm!

Year 2 8.5.2026

Despite a shorter week due to the bank holiday and polling day, the children have made a positive start to their learning.

Maths

In Maths, we have begun our new statistics unit. The children have been learning about pictograms and tally charts and have shown great understanding and enthusiasm. They have worked hard to collect, represent and interpret data, and it has been lovely to see how confident they are becoming with this area of maths.

English

In English, we have started a new unit on descriptive writing, with a focus on character descriptions. We have been looking at famous British monarchs, discussing their appearance, personality and key characteristics. The children will be working towards writing a character description of the infamous King Henry VIII, and they have been very engaged with this exciting historical focus.

Topic

Due to it being a three-day week, we have not had much time to spend on our wider topic learning. We will be picking this up again in more detail next week.

Art
In Art, the children have begun exploring digital portraits. They are enjoying learning how to create artwork using digital tools and are starting to experiment with different techniques and styles.
