Year 1 Summer 2 Week 1
Year 1 have had a fantastic week back!
English
We have started our topic on 'acrostic poems', where children have been learning what this type of poem is, how to write one and also explored skills such as adjectives and verbs to make our poems sound engaging. Next week we will start our topic book 'Chapatti Moon'.
Maths
This week we have been focusing on the concept of 'time', where children have been focusing on 'before and after', days of the week, months and seconds, minutes and hours. For example, how many days of the week do we go to school? Or what month comes after May?
Science Fizz Pop
We have had a special guest arrive to do a lovely fizz pop assembly. Children were super excited and enjoyed all the different bubbles and experiments that were shared!
Geography
In Geography, we have started looking at 'maps'. We have learnt the different types of maps and what they may include such as a compass for direction and a key. We have had the chance to create our own maps together in groups.
Art
Children have started a new topic on 'street view' in art where we have began looking at 'landscape'. Children have had the opportunity to draw their own landscapes based off of what they have observed on their learning walk.
Phonics and Spellings
Please make sure that children are practising their spellings and phonics at home as we approach important times.
Thank you, have a great weekend!
Year 1 Summer Week 6
English
This week in English, children read the story 'Jasper's Beanstalk'. They wrote some words of encouragement for Jasper, to help him with his determination to grow his magic beanstalk. They also wrote some fantastic sentences independently, to retell the story. The children thought about what might be at the top of the beanstalk if they were to climb it, and drew their own settings.
Maths
This week in maths we have been finishing of our unit about fractions, by learning to find a quarter of an amount. Some parents have asked how they can support their child with multiplication and division at home, so we have added some links below that show you exactly how we teach this.
If you want to support your child at home with their learning in maths, the best thing you can do to prepare them for Year 2 is to make sure they know all their number bonds to 10, doubles to 20 and can add and subtract within 20 using a number line.
Find Arrays Add Equal Groups Grouping Sharing
Make Arrays Finding half of a quantity Finding quarter of a quantity
Doubles Song Number Bonds Addition and Subtraction within 20
Thanks to all those parents who joined the Phonics Screening Check meeting on Wednesday afternoon. Please remember to watch the videos linked to this website, and practise reading the words in the packs that were created. Remind your child to look for their 'special friends' and underline, then 'Special friend...Fred talk... Read the word'. Remember until the 12th June, we will count this in the reading record as one of your childrens' reads. Just write the name of the sound they practised under 'book title'. Thank you for your continued support.
We hope you have a fantastic half term and see you back on Tuesday 2nd June! :)
Year 1 Summer 1 Week 5
English
This week in English, the children revisited an old classic - Jack and the Beanstalk. We used this text to explore how the un- prefix changes the meaning of words, and wrote about the emotions of characters using these words. We also planned and wrote a setting description based on the Giant's castle above the clouds.
Maths
In Maths, the children have continued to learn about fractions. They have found half of a quantity, recognised quarters, and found 1/4 of an amount. The children have worked so hard on this tricky concept and should feel very proud!
Foundation
Science was so much fun this week! The children created their own 3D flowering plants, and then labelled the parts. In History, the children learned what an artefact is. We looked at artefacts from Victorian schools and discussed what they told us about what it would have been like to go to school in those times.
We had a special author event this week. The author of the book Dudley's Garden did an online reading for us, and spoke lots about pollination and bees. The children learned some interesting ways they could make their gardens more polinator friendly.
Phonics
Please remember to attend the phonics screening check meeting for parents on 20th May. Also keep practising your child's reading in preparation for the check here.
Thank you for your ongoing support.
